Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This review summarizes the basic approaches for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) detection and diagnosis. The unusual nature of TSEs limits the available diagnostic repertoire. Recent interest in the detection and diagnosis of TSEs has resulted in a variety of validated rapid diagnostic methodologies that have proven to be robust in clinical diagnostic settings. Confirmatory tests are still required and entail specialized equipment and knowledge. At this time all validated tests require tissues only available post mortem. Ante mortem diagnostic tests are highly sought after but to date no broadly applicable, validated ante mortem method has been developed.
