Technical Abstract: The second year of a two year study designed to identify new sources of resistance to aflatoxin accumulation in maize is nearing completion. An F2-derived mapping population from a cross of Mp717x NC300 consisting of approximately 280 families was developed for the study. Mp717 is considered to be a highly resistant inbred that is derived from a genetically different background than Mp313E, an inbred in which quantitative trait loci (QTL) have been previously identified. NC300 is a southern adapted inbred. The goal of this study is to identify QTL associated with reduced aflatoxin accumulation in both locations, study how they interact within and between the two locations, and compare this to what was found in previous studies. Aflatoxin contamination data will be presented from the first year from both locations as well as initial QTL analysis results.
