Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This study explains how an intermediate specialty chemical manufacturing plant and Superfund site in central Pennsylvania contracted with an academic and public relations consultant to explore different strategies to initiate and maintain open communication with the community in which it manufactured agricultural, personal hygiene, and other ingredients. In short, management invested in research based public relations practices to track the opinions and beliefs of key publics and employ program strategies that enabled them to communicate more effectively with key stakeholder groups. Management learned that speaking “chemicalese” or the restricted code of the profession doesn’t assist non-scientific individuals with comprehension of their intended message. The results of a community perception study served as the foundation on which the company built its two-way communication efforts.
