Technical Abstract: Trials were conducted to measure yield of specialty potato varieties and promising breeding lines. In general purple and red fleshed materials have lower yields than standard cultivars. In addition, the percentage of over 4-ounce tubers is much lower. In other words, this breeding material produces numerous small tubers. There are exceptions. POR03PG45-5 is a high yielding purple skin/purple flesh clone with 45% over four ounce size. POR02PG20-1 is an example of high yielding red skin/red flesh clone with over 60% greater than 4-ounce tubers. The yellow flesh materials separate out into two groups. Light yellow clones bred in Europe and currently grown on a limited basis in the U.S. are generally very high yielding and have a large average tuber size. The extremely high carotenoid (i.e. dark yellow) types are low yielding and have a small tuber size. One of the promising yellow flesh lines, POR02PG26-11 is a white skinned type with a splashed red pattern and medium dark yellow flesh. Its yield is as high as Yukon Gold, Ilona and Fabula, three of the best performers, and the percent greater than 4-ounce tubers is over 60%. This clone is very competitive with the current major cultivars. Specialty potatoes are important for potato growers to consider as a part of their diversification as they may have a much higher price in the market.
