Interpretive Summary: 'Ulen' is a newly released high yielding wheat cultivar that is adapted to Minnesota. 'Ulen' matures more quickly than the commonly grown cultivar 'Oxen', and also has stronger straw strength to aid in harvesting the grain. 'Ulen' also has high protein content. 'Ulen' has very good resistance to the wheat stem rust disease and is moderately resistant to the wheat leaf rust disease. 'Ulen' is moderately susceptible to the Fusarium head blight disease. 'Ulen' combines high yields with improved disease resistance and is well adapted for production in Minnesota. This cultivar will help to improve wheat yields in Minnesota.

Technical Abstract: 'Ulen' is a hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (Reg. no. CV ______ , PI ________) cultivar developed and released by the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station in cooperation with USDA-ARS in January 2005. Ulen was released on the basis of its high grain yield, high grain protein content, and early maturity. Ulen was derived from the cross MN92044/HJ98, made in 1994. Ulen is relatively early maturing and produces spikes 2.3 d earlier than HJ98 and 0.5 d earlier than 'Oxen' (PI 596770), the most widely grown cultivar in Minnesota since the late 1990s. Ulen is a semidwarf cultivar and averages 87 cm, 4 cm taller than HJ98 and Oxen in Minnesota trials. Ulen yielded 4404 kg ha-1 compared to 4300 kg ha-1 for HJ98 and 4403 kg ha-1 for Oxen in trials in Minnesota in 2000-2004. Ulen has medium straw strength and a lodging rating of 2.5 when scored on a scale of 0 (erect) to 9 (lodged). Ulen is moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (FHB, caused primarily by Fusarium graminearum Schwabe) in misted, inoculated field nurseries, similar to the reaction of Oxen. Ulen is resistant to currently prevalent races of stem rust as seedlings in greenhouse tests and as adults in field tests with the same races. It is moderately resistant to prevalent races of leaf rust. Ulen is susceptible to the race 1 isolate Pti2 (ATCC 44143) of tan spot [caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Died.) Drechs.] based on greenhouse assays. Field reaction to the foliar diseases tan spot and septoria tritici blotch (caused by Septoria tritici Roberge ex Desmaz.) is moderate, better than HJ98 and Oxen.
