Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The development of marine fish aquaculture in the US is challenged by a number of complex issues such as political and regulatory constraints, marketing and market competition, health management and biosecurity, and water quality and waste management. However, the most commonly cited constraint to this emerging industry is the inability to achieve natural spawning of captive broodstocks and subsequent production of seed stock in commercial quantities. Scientists from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution and the USDA Agricultural Research Service are constructing a new breeding and hatchery technology center to develop methods for year-round production of seed stock from Florida pompano Trachinotus carolinus and black sea bass Centropristis striata. The new facility will have all the capabilities of any modern marine fish hatchery, from broodstock conditioning systems to continuous live feeds production, to intensive larval rearing systems. A brief overview of the facility with detailed information on the broodstock conditioning systems is provided.
