Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Studies were conducted in the laboratory to test preference for oviposition by the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) on an artificial leaf substitute (cheese cloth stretched over a embroidering wood ring) treated with soybean plant extracts. Hexane, methanol, and water extracts prepared sequentially from soybean leaves and immature pods were evaluated. The best oviposition stimulant was the methanol extract from immature soybean pods. Evaluation of a series of fractions from the chromatographic separation of the methanol soybean pod extract was obtained from a reverse phase C18 column, followed by chromatography on a silica column. The 20% aqueous methanol fraction from the C18 column contained the best oviposition stimulants. That fraction was then further fractionated on a silica column, and a 60% methanol:dichloromethane fraction, containing 5-10 spots by TLC analysis, had the best oviposition stimulants.
