Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Seeds of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] can vary greatly in size and composition. Our objective was to compare the performance of reciprocal F1 progenies derived from parents with obvious size differences. Reciprocal crosses were made among two tofu-type lines (1000 seed wt. equals 405 g or 300 g) and two natto-type lines (1000 seed wt. equals 137 g or 131 g) to produce eight reciprocal F1s. Tofu x tofu and natto x natto crosses were not made. Comparisons between F1s, within F1s, and between F1s and their parents were conducted for seed size and composition and seedling/plant phenotype. We have hypothesized that full-sib F1s should appear and perform identically, except for maternal conditions influencing seed size. The findings of this study will aid plant breeders to understand seedling performance as it relates to seed size and composition.
