Technical Abstract: Water is the single most limiting factor to dryland crop production in the Central Great Plains. This paper reviews the long-term precipitation record at Akron, CO in relation to the drought of 2002, methods for efficiently storing precipitation, increasing precipitation use efficiency through cropping system intensification, and crop yield response to timing and amount of precipitation and crop water use.
