Interpretive Summary: This paper is a series of photographs of the dissection of a drone, with special emphasis on the reproductive tract, done in association with research on semen preservation. The photographs extend available references on drone anatomy beyond simple line drawings. This information will be used by beekeepers, bee breeders and bee scientists as a general reference for the actual appearance of the dissected system. Technical Abstract: This paper is a series of photographs of the dissection of a drone, with special emphasis on the reproductive tract. The maturation process of sperm is discussed in terms of where the sperm are found in young vs. mature drones, and the appearance of the storage organs. Accessory glands and reproductive structures are identified, and their role in mating is described. Drone ejaculation for the collection of semen for use in artificial insemination of a queen is also shown. |
