Interpretive Summary: This paper is a series of photographs of the dissection of a queen, with special emphasis on the reproductive tract, done in association with research on semen preservation. The photographs extend available references on queen reproductive anatomy beyond simple line drawings. This information will be used by beekeepers, bee breeders and bee scientists as a general reference for the actual appearance of the dissected system. Technical Abstract: This paper is a series of photographs of the dissection of a queen, with special emphasis on the reproductive tract. The organs of the reproductive tract are shown in relation to the other structures of the abdomen, and then with all of the abdominal organs separated. The different appearance of the ovaries between virgin, mated and non-laying queen are clearly visible. The sperm storage organ, the spermatheca, from a virgin and a well-mated queen are also pictured, including a close-up of the spermathecal gland. |
