Citation: Rutger, J.N., Bryant, R.J., Bernhardt, J.L., Gibbons, J.W. 2005. Registration of nine indica germplasms of rice. Crop Science. 45:1170-1171.

Interpretive Summary: This paper documents the development and release of the first group of indica germplasm lines with suitable maturity and grain quality for US markets, This is important because we have been a japonica (temperate) rice growing nation to date, which limits the pest resistance and yield opportunities. The indicas(tropical) rices are grown on perhaps three fourths of the worlds rice acreage but have been unadapted to the US.

Technical Abstract: Nine indica germplasm lines possessing suitable early maturity and grain quality for US markets were developed at Stuttgart AR by crossing an early maturing cultivar from China, which did not have US grain quality, with late maturing experimental from IRRI that had suitable quality. Through a series of successive generational selections these lines were developed. Straw strength is still a problem at high nitrogen fertility level.
