Technical Abstract: The use of biodiesel, a renewable diesel fuel produced from vegetable and animal lipids, is growing rapidly in many regions of the world. The majority of this fuel is produced from crude degummed or highly refined vegetable oils. Spurred by the economic noncompetitiveness of biodiesel produced from such feedstocks, technologies for the production of biodiesel from less expensive lipids have been developed. This article describes the approaches commonly employed in industrial biodiesel production and the relationship between feedstock quality and the chemical routes chosen for its synthesis.
