Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The synthesis, isolation, and characterization of phosphonate-functionalized trialkoxysilane monomers are described. Use of the classic Michaelis-Arbusov rearrangement to produce 3-diethylphosphonatepropyltrimethoxysilane, (CH3O)3Si(CH2)3P=O(OCH2CH3)2, in high yield permits the incorporation of the new monomer into a variety of new copolymers. Details of the synthesis and the reaction of alkoxysilane-phoshonate monomers with dimethyldimethoxysilane and methyltrimethoxysilane are characterized by TGA and NMR analysis.
