Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The SWCS and SSSA have intensified collaboration on educational activities for their memberships in recent years. Our 4th SWCS and SSSA Annual Joint Symposium will focus on specific topics that evaluate the environmental effectiveness of conservation practices and the programs that provide incentives. This joint symposium will be presented at the SWCS 2003 Annual Meeting at Spokane, WA and at the SSSA 2003, Annual Meeting at Denver, CO. The joint symposium will be specific to four major items: 1) Using common measurements for conservation effectiveness. 2) Data acquisition on the effectiveness of conservation practices. 3) Using indices and models to evaluate conservation effectiveness, and 4) Developing a long term research strategy for collecting the needed information. The speakers will discuss how to use models and indices to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation practices, including cost and accountability, economic, and social benefits of conservation practices. This session will also cover how the current effectiveness of conservation programs work in conjunction with the Farm Bill. We expect to develop a national consensus on long term research strategies for collecting needed information and hope to start a national discussion that will grow into a larger 2004 symposium on effectiveness of conservation practices.
