Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Poult enteritis complex (PEC) is an economically important disease of young turkeys. Three viruses have been associated with PEC-like disease; turkey coronavirus (TCV), turkey astrovirus (TAstV) and turkey reoviruses (TRV). Currently, there is little standardization among the diagnostic tests for these agents. Real-time RT-PCR (RRT-PCR) offers several advantages as a diagnostic tool, including specificity and the ability to screen for multiple agents simultaneously. Here a multiplex RRT-PCR assay for TCV, TAstV and TRV is reported. Assay detection limits for each virus were determined with in vitro transcribed RNA. An evaluation of different sampling times and types for each virus was evaluated with experimentally infected poults.
