Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Coccidiosis is the most costly parasitic disease of poultry. Anticoccidial medications, added as feed supplements have been the primary methods of control. However, because coccidia have developed considerable resistance to these medications, alternative control methods are being sought. Additionally, because European countries have banned feed supplementation of antibiotics as growth promoters for food animals, poultry producers, not only in Europe, but the USA as well, are looking for alternatives, particularly natural products considered as GRAS, to be used to maximize performance of their flocks. This article reviews these newly popularized products, points out the few instances in which they have been tested for anticoccidial activity, and suggests which ones show the best promise for developing effective new control strategies for coccidiosis. The author was invited to write this article which will be published in COCCI Forum, a Schering-Plough trade journal.
