Interpretive Summary: Sugarbeet is one of the two top sucrose producing plants and is an excellent host for numerous species of nematode. Cyst nematode is the most important plant parasitic nematode of sugarbeet and is difficult to control. This nematode is widely spread in sugarbeet growing areas. In this chapter: (i) the life cycle and infestation of cyst nematode; (ii) development of nematode-resistant sugarbeet; (iii) meiotic behavior and resistance transmission in sugarbeet hybrid progeny; (iv) cyst nematode dynamics and management; (v) resistance genes and the associated markers (isozyme and molecular); and (vi) prospectives of cyst nematode resistance breeding will be in-depth described.

Technical Abstract: Cyst nematode is the most important plant parasitic nematode of sugar beet and is difficult to control. This nematode is widely spread in sugar beet growing areas and occurs virtually wherever the family Chenopodiaceae and Cruciferae plants are grown. It damages sugar beet's primary root system and severely limits sugar beet yield, quality, and sucrose content. Management of cyst nematode in sugarbeet fields is challenging due to the nematode's wide host range and increasing restriction on nematicide utilization. The most promising means of nematode control is through planting resistant cultivars. Development of sugarbeet with resistance to cyst nematode encountered many challenges in the past 60 years. Nonetheless, great progress has been made in scientific discoveries and the resistance breeding. Elite nematode resistant sugarbeet varieties will become available in the foreseeable future.
