Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Leaf rust (Puccinia triticina Eriks.) is the most common disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The objective of this study was to characterize leaf rust resistance genes in hard red spring wheat cultivars. Twenty-six spring wheat cultivars and 18 'Thatcher' isolines differing for single seedling leaf rust resistance genes were tested with 11 races of leaf rust. Seedling leaf rust resistance genes Lr1, Lr2a, Lr10, Lr14a, Lr16, Lr21, Lr23, and Lr24, were postulated to be present in the cultivars. Most cultivars appeared to have the resistance gene Lr34 based on adult plant tests. The cultivars 'Norm' and 'Alsen' have good field resistance to leaf rust and were crossed with 'Thatcher' wheat for further genetic analysis. 'Norm' was determined to have Lr1, Lr10, Lr13, Lr14a, Lr16, and Lr34. 'Alsen' was determined to have Lr2a, Lr10,Lr13, Lr34, and may be heterogeneous for Lr16.
