Technical Abstract: Phytonutrients are key dietary components which appear to promote health and reduce the risk of disease. To understand their biological effects and to make informed recommendations about dietary intake levels, we must understand the kinetics of these molecules. Key kinetic questions include bioavailability, pool sizes, elimination rates, and pathways of metabolism. The experimental design of phytonutrient kinetic studies must be planned carefully to answer these key questions. Design issues include molecule tracer options, sampling frequency, laboratory analysis techniques, and compartmental model structure. Options and implications surrounding these issues will be discussed.
