Technical Abstract: There is no reported resistance in sugar beet to damping-off caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2 despite its importance as perhaps the primary seedling mortality problem in the US. The overall objectives were to screen sugar beet breeding lines for resistance to Rhizoctonia seedling damping off and examine the relationship between seedling damping off and Rhizoctonia crown and root rot, analyze the histopathology and histochemistry of the sugar beet seedling - Rhizoctonia solani infection under compatible and incompatible interactions. A reliable screening method was developed to examine the host pathogen interaction, and results showed that all tested strains of Rhizoctonia included isolates that do not cause visible symptoms, infect sugar beet seedlings. Resistance should be sought in mechanisms that exclude the pathogen from penetrating the plant cuticle.
