Interpretive Summary: This paper describes an early flowering mutant that is 16 days earlier than its parent, LaGrue, a popular Arkansas rice cultivar. Earliness is controlled by a single recessive gene. The mutant may be useful as a tropical genetic stock or breeding source for early maturity.

Technical Abstract: An early flowering mutant that is 16 days earlier than its parent was developed by gamma radiation of the long grain cultivar, LaGrue. The breeding value of LGRU ef may be limited by the apparent yield penalty of 20% or more, although this disadvantage may be minimized by testing in different genetic backgrounds. The immediate value of LGRU ef probably will be as a genetic stock carrying a fully recessive gene for early maturity.
