Interpretive Summary: Many species of flies are pests, but many are also beneficial as predators that eat other insects. This paper summarizes and provides corrections and new data to all previous information on the correct names, classification, and other literature of a group of beneficial flies call the xylophagids. It is part of a larger study covering all known species of flies. This information will allow identifiers, pest managers, and others acess to the most up-to-date and complete information on these important insects.
Technical Abstract:
The world fauna of Xylophagidae is cataloged, which includes 9 valid genera and 131 species. A key to world genera is presented, as well as a short discussion of each genus. Full taxonomic citations, synonymy, type data, and geographic distribution data are presented for each species. New synonymies and new combinations are documented, and all literature has been rechecked and accurately dated.
