Technical Abstract: Availability of comprehensive information on environmental parameters and elemental distribution is a key to fully assess the capacity and condition of coastal ecosystems. The distribution of trace elements in sediments collected from various locations along Atlantic and brackish waters around Fort Pulaski national monument of Savannah, Georgia was evaluated in this study. Sediment samples were collected by a bottom grab sampler (Clam shell type) from 0.5 to 1.0 meter depths below mean low tide level. Total trace elemental concentrations determined by neutron activation technique yielded higher values compared to concentrations of the same elements in HNO3 digest by ICP-OES technique. The concentrations of various trace elements measured in HNO3 digest varied in the range of 8 to 45, 0.1 to 2, 0.02 to 0.5, 20 to 69, and 41 to 136 mg/g for Zn, Fe, Cd, Cr, Mn respectively. The concentrations of As, Se, and Hg were negligible.
