Interpretive Summary: A new sorghum line, RN583, with low hydrocyanic acid (HCN) content was developed by the USDA-ARS and the Agricultural Research Division, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Nebraska, and released in June, 2002. RN583 has large heads and produces higher grain yields than the low HCN check N97at Ithaca, NE. Seedling HCN content of RN583 varied from 170 ppm to 1248 ppm in three separate greenhouse experiments. Within individual experiments HCN content of RN583 was equivalent to the HCN content of N97, and was approximately one-half the HCN content of Redlan or RTx430. RN583 is a source of low HCN germplasm with improved agronomic characteristics when compared to previously released low HCN-potential R-line sorghum germplasm. RN583 has application for use in developing grain sorghum R-lines with reduced potential for HCN production in stover following grain harvest.

Technical Abstract: RN583 sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] germplasm line was developed by the USDA-ARS and the Agricultural Research Division, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Nebraska, and was released in June, 2002. RN583 is a S8 selection from the low hydrocyanic acid (HCN)-potential population NP36. RN583 exhibited long panicles and produced significantly higher grain yields than the low HCN-potential check N97 when grown at Ithaca, NE in 1998 and 2000. Seedling hydrocyanic acid (HCN) content of RN583 varied from 170 ppm to 1248 ppm in three separate greenhouse experiments. Within individual experiments HCN content of RN583 was equivalent to the HCN content of N97, and was approximately one-half the HCN content of Redlan or RTx430. RN583 has purple necrotic plant color, white seed, restores fertility in A1 cytoplasm, and does not have a pigmented testa. RN583 averaged 137 cm in height at Ithaca, NE, and produced hybrids 135 cm in height when crossed to ACK60. Average time to 50% anthesis was 83 d which was equivalent to Redlan, and 6 d earlier than RTx430. A low incidence of male-sterility probably due to ms3 has been observed in RN583 which can be used to facilitate crossing.
