Interpretive Summary: Biological and molecular properties of Ryegrass mosaic virus (RGMV) are briefly described. Summary information include a general description of the virus and symptoms induced in infected plants, physical properties of the virus particle, organization of the viral genome, relationships with other related viruses, diagnosis, and agronomical importance.

Technical Abstract: A brief technical description of Ryegrass mosaic virus (RGMV) is presented. Described are biological properties, genome organization, and phylogenetic relationships among RGMV and other potyvirus species. RGMV is designated as a the type species of the genus Rymovirus within the plant virus family Potyviridae. Nucleotide sequence comparisons and serological assays indicate that RGMV is most closely related to the rymoviruses Agropyron mosaic virus and Hordeum mosaic virus.
