Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A research summary of section E: host-plant resistance, physiological disorders, and host-plant interactions is provided. Advancements continue to be made in breeding and screening plants for resistance to whitefly and whitefly-transmitted viruses and include studies with cultivars, breeding-lines and germplasm of cantaloupe, watermelon, poinsettia, and cotton from researchers in Texas, South Carolina, and California. Researchers at the Universities of California and Florida conducted multiple studies on physiological disorders. Great strides have been made in understanding the plant molecular mechanisms and genetics of squash silverleaf (SSL) disorder, a serious physiological disorder of commercial Cucurbita species associated with the feeding of nymphal Bemisia argentifolii, and how that translates into reduction in plant growth and yield observed in the field. Host-plant interaction summaries included studies on the parasitism of whitefly on taxonomically diverse host plants by augmentation, elucidating the influence of vegetable hosts and temperature on net distance traveled by whitefly crawlers, and evaluation of upland cultivars for whitefly populations in relation to trichome densities in field trials.
