Title: EVALUATION OF CEREAL-APHID RESISTANT WHEAT ACCESSIONS AGAINST RHOPALOSIPHUMPADI

Technical Abstract: Host-plant resistance to Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) was evaluated for eight wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) accessions, including several with resistance to other cereal aphids. In one antibiosis experiment, neither time to reproduction for R. padi nor number of nymphs differed among wheat accessions, but intrinsic rate of increase did differ. R. padi had lowest intrinsic rates of increase on accessions TAM 110 and STARS9303W, and highest rates on KS92WGRC24. In a second antibiosis experiment, neither time to reproduction nor intrinsic rates of increase differed among wheat accessions, but the number of nymphs produced differed. R. padi produced more nymphs on KS92WGRC24 than on accessions GRS1201, Halt, or MV4. Both alatae and apterae preferred particular wheat accessions. Alatae preferred all accessions except STARS to MV4; alatae preferred KS92WGRC24 less than Halt, TAM 110, or Vista. Apterae preferred all other accessions to MV4. The proportion of R. padi that developed to winged adults when placed on plants as first instars did not differ among accessions.
