Technical Abstract: Flooding is an important stress that reduces soybean growth and seed yield. The study was conducted to determine the tolerance of 108 PIs and 6 Midwest soybean cultivars to flooding at the seedling, V3 and R1 growth stages. Tolerance of complete submergence was determined by submerging 4-d old seedlings for 4 days in darkness at 26 C. Tolerance to flooding at the V3 and R1 growth stages was conducted in growth chamber and greenhouse experiments, respectively. Plant height and leaf color were measured at the end of the two-week flooding period and also after one week of recovery together with leaf area and plant biomass. The experiments were repeated two times, each with three replicantes. The results showed not correlation between the flooding responses at the three different growth stages. In the greenhouse experiment where the plants were flooded under high light intensity and high temperature, plants of some PIs died during the one- week recovery period. The PIS that died in this experiment were highly correlated with those that died in the 2000 field screening experiment in MO. This study indicated that tolerance to flooding is highly affected by temperature and light during the flooding and recovery periods suggesting that screening tests should be conducted under these conditions.
