Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Plant breeding and plant genomics are fundamentally different in their practical objectives, yet promise to be complementary tools to achieve sustainable agriculture and improved plant products. The problem is integrating the knowledge gained from genomics technologies with practical breeding objectives. Using examples developed in our laboratory taken from the practical breeding objective of improving sugarbeet emergence and stan establishment, the use and promise of genomics technologies are illustrated in the dissection of the genetic and biochemical processes operating during sugarbeet germination under various stress regimes. New and sometimes unexpected insights have been gained from this approach that are being used in developing novel germplasm screening methods. With the accumulating mass of genomic data from model systems such as arabidopsis, it is becoming imperative to develop new data analysis tools that will allow rapid integration of genomics results into breeding programs. Database structure based on functional object oriented programing (FOOP) languages may fill this gap.
