Technical Abstract: The spotted pod borer, Maruca vitrata, is a key pest of short duration pigeonpea. Experiments were conducted to compare the ovipositional preferences of females among i) different pigeonpea genotypes, and ii) among different plant parts. In choice tests, all pigeonpea lines were more attractive than cowpea though pigeonpea genotype ICPL 90011 received significantly more eggs than any other genotype. Among plant parts, leaves were the most attractive ovipoistional site followed by tender pods. Mature pods were the least attractive for egg laying.
