Technical Abstract: Eight heterorhabditid isolates (seven strains of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and one strain of H. megidis) were evaluated for vertical migration in 9.5 cm sand columns at 25C, with and without wax moth (Galleria mellonella) larvae at the bottom. The number of infective juveniles (IJs) in the upper section generally decreased over time as the IJs moved down. However, with two isolates, the IJs quickly moved to the bottom and then started back up. Only five of the H. bacteriophora isolates killed wax moth larvaae. IJs of H. maagidis moved down slowly and did not cause wax moth mortalaity. The lateral movement of IJs of Steinernemma riobravae, S. glaseri, S. arenaria and H. bacteriophora was determined at 15, 20, 25 and 30C. The IJs moved more rapidly as the temperature increased. The number of IJs extracted from the sand system decreased at all temperatures as time lapsed. Steinernema riobraavae and S. glaseri oriented toward wax moth larvae and reached the host and killed it faster at higher temperatures. Steinernema arenaria moved away fromthe wax moth host and H. bacteriophora did not show a positive or negative response to the host larvae.
