Technical Abstract: Rate of crop development is one the critical processes in determination of yield. Development defines the time of occurrence and, to a great extent, the size of organs. In grain crops, since the harvest index is relatively stable, larger plants tend to have greater yield. In an N management experiment conducted in 1992, we observed distinct differences in time of tassel appearance (VT) across a range of N treatments, with both limited and excessive levels of N hastening development by about one day. Observations on development in response of several hybrids, in both continuous culture and when rotated with soybean, to N application rates were continued for several seasons. Preliminary analysis of results from the later experiments appear to confirm that rate of crop development is delayed with a moderate N supply. Reasons for, and implications of, these results will be discussed.
