Technical Abstract: Integrated genetic and physical genome maps are extremely valuable for map based gene isolation, comparative genome analysis, and as sources of sequence ready clones for genome sequencing projects. Obtaining gene sequences and information about gene distribution across the genome are also invaluable for building informative microarrays, identifying genes in quantitative trait loci and in mapping gene rich regions of the genome. The Agricultural Research Service - Texas A & M University sorghum genome research team is using a collection of complementary approaches to construct an integrated genetic, physical and gene map of the sorghum genome. A specific objective of the program is to identify a vast array of grass genes that respond to various biotic and abiotic factors and to identify genes that improve plant function in stress-prone environments.
