Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: To investigate which soil test P (STP) method best predicts P runoff concentration, soil and runoff samples were collected from seven soils in permanent pasture exhibiting a wide range of P levels due to prior manure applications. The STP was extracted by traditional (Mehlich III, Bray- Kurtz P1, and Olson) as well as potential environmental soil P (distilled water and iron-oxide paper) techniques. Simulated rain was used to produce runoff which was collected for 30 min. The r values for STP by each extraction method correlated with dissolved reactive P (DRP) and bioavailable P (BAP) concentrations in runoff, being highest for distilled water and iron-oxide paper (r-0.90). The relationship between the level of P in the soil and runoff was shown to vary with soil type and depth of sample.
