Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Fuji apples harvested after development of watercore were used to evaluate responses to treatment with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and controlled atmosphere (CA) storage protocols that can minimize development of CO**2 injury. All fruit was stored at 1 deg C. Storage treatments included air, CA (1.5 kPa O2; 0.1, 1 or 3 kPa CO2) established within 3 days of harvest, 2 to 6 week delay in CA establishment, 1 to 3 month delay in accumulation of CO2 to 3 kPA during CA, or pre-storage treatment with 1 ul l**-1 1-MCP for 18 hours at 20 deg C. Treatment with 1-MCP delayed dissipation of watercore during CA compared to air storage. After 9 months storage, watercore scores were highest for 1-MCP treated fruit with no CA delay or a 2-week delay prior to CA with 3 kPA CO2. These treatments also had the highest values for firmness, and high titratable acidity compared to fruit stored in air. Treatments with the highest incidence of internal browning after storage were CA with 3 kPa CO2 established with no delay regardless of 1-MCP treatment. Treatment with 1-MCP reduced the effectiveness of delaying CA to reduce development of CO2 injury.
