Title: THE EFFECTS OF PREDATORY NEMATODES FOR HARMFUL INSECTS (MELOLONTH LAE NOCTUIDAE, BLATTIDAE) IN HUNGARY

Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Emphasis is now on plant protection methods able to reduce pests without using chemicals, such as the application of entomopathogenic nematodes against insects. In Hungary several institutions carry out research on nematodes. Cooperation exists between the Plant Protection Institute of the VE Georgikon Faculty of Agriculture and the Genetic Department of Eotvos Lorand University. The investigations are carried on in the framework of an American-Hungarian program. On the American side the USDA/ARS Beltsville Research Institute and the Application Technology Research Unit at Wooster, Ohio take part. The nematodes are potential biological control agents against the following pests: Scotia segetum, Mammestra brassicae, Melolontha melolontha, Polyphilla fullo, Blatta orientalis and Periplaneta americana. The nematodes used in the experiments were: Steinernema feltiae, S. carpocapsae, S. glaseri, S. scapterisci, S. riobrave and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora. Experiments were carried out in laboratory culture pots at room temperature. The insect larvae were treated at two of the following three concentrations (100, 1000 and 10000 infective juvenile (IJ) / ml) with 4 replications. Mortality of larvae was evaluated 7 days after treatment. Against white grubs, the l00 IJ/ml and 1000 IJ/ml gave an averaged of 25,4% and 100% mortality. The order of effectiveness against grubs was H bacteriophora HH, S. glaseri, S. riobrave and H. bacteriophora AZ 32. Against Noctuidae larvae H. bacteriophora HH was the most effective, resulting in 50% mortality. The mortality of cockroaches treated with l00 IJ/ml and 10000 IJ/ml per dish was 74% and 100%, respectively, after 24 hours.
