Interpretive Summary: Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a multipurpose crop species which can be used as an edible oil, as well as a dietary supplement, and for industrial applications. It is an important underutilized crop, and through additional research involving genetic resources, has a high potential for further expansion and development. This Directory was developed by the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute in cooperation with the International Safflower Germplasm Committee. It provides information on safflower germplasm collections held by different gene banks around the world. This information was gathered from databases, literature, and answers to questionnaires.

Technical Abstract: Questionnaires were sent to all known germplasm repositories holding collections of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). Information was requested on curator identity, number of accessions, origins, maintenance , extent of duplication, availability, quarantine restrictions, evaluation program, and extent of documentation. Responses were complied from fifteen national collections. Countries with the most extensive collections include China, India, Mexico, and the United States.
