Technical Abstract: The present invention is directed towards a unique strain of Bacillus subtilis for inhibiting growth of plant pathogenic fungi and bacteria and methods for treating or protecting plants from fungal and bacterial infections. The particular isolate, B. subtilis strain ATCC 55614, was isolated from the rhizosphere of raspberry plants grown in Washington state. The patent claims include : 1. A method for isolating a bioactive extract from culture medium; 2. Separation of fractions from the crude extract on a solid support, and 3. Screening of the separated fractions for antimicrobial activity. The patent was awarded on Dec 21, 1999 and listed as United States patent # 6,004,774.
