Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Citrus culture throughout the world has depended mostly upon a small group of elite cultivars with a narrow genetic base. This contributes to their vulnerability to pathogens, particularly viral ones. Concerns over this situation led to the establishment of the National Germplasm Repository for Citrus in Riverside, California in 1987 by the US Dept of Agriculture. The Repository is charged with preserving genetic diversity within citrus. A pathogen testing and elimination program is in place to assure that researchers have available to them a source of pathogen-free true-to-type germplasm.
