Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Enhanced long-term management of natural resources, farmer profitability, and overall social well-being are essential to sustainable irrigated agriculture. Because these objectives often seem to conflict, all agricultural stakeholders--farmers, irrigation districts, support and regulatory government agencies, and other interested parties--need to interact proactively to identify and address common needs. To this end, the Management Improvement Program (MIP) was tested in the Maricopa- Stanfield Irrigation and Drainage District (MSIDD) area in central Arizona, USA, as a managed change process to improve the performance of an irrigated agricultural system. The MSIDD-Area MIP application is documented in a series of six papers published in a special issue of Irrigation and Drainage Systems. A general background paper provides an overall account of the entire application; the Diagnostic Analysis paper describes the first phase of the MIP; and a third paper focuses on lessons learned from the demonstration project. Each of the final three papers relates to an individual aspect of the specific agricultural system within the MSIDD area water delivery performance, on-farm performance, and economics. This editorial provides an introduction to the series, including the original motivation for the project and insights gained since its completion.
