Technical Abstract: Control of seedling diseases in Michigan is dependent upon identification of the causes of these diseases, yet, the identities of the causal organisms of most seedling disease are not known. A survey was initiated in 1999 to identify pathogens causing seedling disease of sugarbeets. Diseased seedlings were collected throughout the early portions of the growing season, and pathogens were isolated from them and identified. Pythium spp. were the most frequently isolated pathogens in April, and continued to occur through the early growing season. The frequency of isolation of Pythium spp. decreased as the season progressed, and in early June, Rhizoctonia solani was the most frequently isolated pathogen. Other pathogens isolated throughout the sampling period included Phoma betae and Aphanomyces cochlioides.
