Technical Abstract: The German cockroach continues to pose a threat to human health and food. Within the last decade, cockroach induced asthma and allergy have been recognized as increasingly serious problems, especially among the poor, providing additional incentive for effective cockroach control efforts. Unfortunately, insecticide resistance is a major impediment to effective cockroach control. Research has been conducted and briefly summarized in this popular article. Molecular and biochemical mechanisms of insecticide resistance are explained and research dealing with insecticide resistance mechanisms in the German cockroach are summarized.
