Technical Abstract: Recently composition of the plant virus family Potiviridae has been revised. This index entry presents, in tabular form, the main properties and members of the new genus Tritimovirus. Virions are flexuous rods 15 x 700 nm, comprised of a single capsid protein and a (+)-sense RNA genome. Wheat streak mosaic virus (type species) and Brome streak mosaic virus are member species. Oat necrotic mottle virus and Sugarcane streak mosaic virus are tentative members of the genus. These viruses replicate in the cytoplasm and induce pinwheel inclusion bodies typical of all potyviruses. Wheat streak mosaic and Brome streak mosaic viruses are transmited by an eriophyid mite while no vector has been identified for the other two viruses. Wheat streak mosaic virus occurs in North Armerica and Europe. GenBank accession numbers of nucleotide and protein sequences are provided to facilitate phylogenetic comparisons between Tritimovirus and any newly identified plant virus.
