Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In 1997-1998, the resistance to Phytophthora infestans and agronomic traits were evaluated in 14 cultivars and 60 breeding selections. The resistance was tested both under high natural infection pressure and in laboratory, using artificial inoculation of detached leaflets and tuber slices. The highly pathogenic fungus strains of P. infestans were used for inoculation. The Polish cv. Meduza and the foreign cv. Cruza 148 have shown a high level of both detached leaflet resistance in laboratory testing and foliar resistance under natural infection pressure. Cv. Meduza had also resistant tuber slices. Among 13 diploid and 47 tetraploid breeding selections, a foliage resistance equal or exceeding that of cvs Cruza 148 and Meduza was found in 9 diploid and 16 tetraploid selections. Among them were selections with a high level of tuber resistance and/or an earlier maturity than cv. Meduza or cv. Cruza 148.
