Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Surface Radiation Research Branch of NOAA's Air Resources Laboratory has been operating four surface radiation stations in the GCIP area to supply comprehensive surface radiation budget data for climatic regions ranging from cold and dry to warm and moist. This network is sponsored by NOAA's Office of Global Programs and the Air Resources Laboratory. Established stations are at Fort Peck, Montana; Bondville, Illinois; the USDA's Goodwin Creek Experimental Watershed in northwestern Mississippi; and Table Mountain near Boulder, Colorado. These stations were installed between April 1994 and July 1995. Their general and specific locations were selected strategically by GCIP scientists with emphasis on their suitability for hydrologic and satellite-based studies. The measurement system was designed to supply continuous quantitative information of the surface radiation balance, thus, the primary measurements include upwelling and downwelling solar and thermal infrared. The SURFRAD station results will be intercompared and contrasted with results from other regions where similar measurements have been made, and an interpretation of differences will be offered.
