Title: 1999 White Food-Grade Corn Performance Testing

Technical Abstract: White food-grade corn is used mainly for dry corn meal and grits products. Seed producers, corn millers, and farmers need agronomic performance data to select white food-grade corn hybrids adapted for growing in specific regions of the United States. The national performance tests of white food-grade hybrids includes germplasm classified by the submitting seedsman ninto late and early maturity groups. Smaller seed companies have benefitte by having their products tested in a much wider area than could be accomplished by the company itself. Late maturity, white food-grade corn performance and grain quality testing has been conducted from 1977 to the present. During 23 years (including 1999) of testing late maturity germplasm, 688 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by two universities and 53 private companies. For 1999, 9 of 30 entries are new to the test. Early maturity, white food-grade performance and grain quality (quality data reported beginning in 1988) testing has been done since 1984. During 16 years of testing, 362 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by three universities and 43 private companies. For 1999, 5 of 28 entries are new to the test. Data on European corn borer tolerance and Stewart's wilt susceptibility are obtained for both tests. Grain quality data that are common across tests include test weight, 100-kernel weight, kernel density, kernel size, percentage thins, and percentage horny endosperm. Testing is supported by the North American Millers' Association (NAMA) and participating seed companies.
