Technical Abstract: A method is presented for determining moisture content of granular materials from the microwave complex permittivity of those materials that is largely independent of bulk density and structure of the granular materials. Further, a calibration function of the permittivity components is developed that served well in providing moisture content for both shelled corn and wheat when permittivity measurements were taken at 11.3 GHz. For similar measurements on oats and rape seed at 11.8 GHz, the same calibration function served well for these two different granular materials also. Thus a unified calibration function appears to be possible for a wide range of granular materials in providing density- and structure-independent moisture content determination from permittivity measurements.
