Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Subgroup J avian leukosis virus (ALV-J) is an emerging retrovirus that can cause tumors and other production problems in chickens. The envelope gene of strain ADOL-Hc1 of ALV-J was sequenced and cloned into fowlpox virus and baculovirus. Biological and virological analysis of these recombinant viruses confirmed the expression of the envelope proteins. Inoculation of chickens with these recombinant viruses resulted in antibody that was detected by an ELISA, but not with virus neutralization tests.
