Interpretive Summary: Lymphosarcoma, a cancer-like condition, was diagnosed in the eye of an Indian peafowl. Our diagnostic investigations revealed a positive reaction for reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV), a virus that can cause cancer-like diseases in poultry as well as other avian species. Our data document for the first time that REV can induce such cancer-like condition in this species, the Indian peafowl. The information represents the association of REV with orbital lymphosarcoma in a peafowl and should be useful to veterinary diagnosticians, particularly zoo veterinarians in the diagnosis of such conditions.

Technical Abstract: Lymphosarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of exophthalmia in Indian peafowl. Complications of orbital exenteration in birds may include profound oculocardiac reflex and hemorrhage. Orbital bleeding may be controlled by direct pressure, electrocautery, topical administration of bovine thrombin, and application of sterile gelatine sponges and oxidized regenerated cellulose. Blood transfusions may be necessary. Reticuloendotheliosis virus may play a role in the genesis of lymphosarcoma in peafowl.
